CONFIRMED: Hunters season 2 will be available to stream on Prime Video from Friday 13th January 2023.

All eight episodes are expected to drop at once, which goes some way to making up for the three-year wait fans have had to endure.

Hunters was renewed for a second season all the way back in August 2020, with the COVID pandemic likely a factor in the slow production cycle.

At the time, creator David Weil commented: "I am beyond grateful to Jen and the Amazon family for their continued extraordinary support of Hunters."

"Alongside our magnificent cast, incredible crew, and brilliant writers and producers, I am more eager than ever to share the next chapter of the Hunters saga with the world."

Since then, it has been clarified that Hunters season 2 will serve as a concluding chapter for the conspiracy thriller, with no third entry planned.

Hunters season 2 cast

The full Hunters cast is back for this second outing, led by Logan Lerman (Bullet Train) as Jonah Heidelbaum, a maths whizz who first becomes involved in Nazi hunting following the murder of his beloved grandmother.

He becomes the protege of veteran hunter Meyer Offerman, played by screen legend Al Pacino, although their relationship ends in disaster when Jonah learns that he has been hiding a big secret.

The resulting confrontation ended in Meyer's apparent death, which is why his return in season 2 has left viewers rather perplexed – we'll find out soon how he managed to survive.

Carol Kane (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Tiffany Boone (Nine Perfect Strangers), Louis Ozawa (Pachinko) and Kate Mulvany (Elvis) are also back as members of Jonah and Meyer's revenge-seeking gang.

This time, it appears they can rely on the support of FBI agent Millie Morris, played by Jerrika Hinton, after her initial scrutiny of their activity in the first instalment.

Meanwhile, Lena Olin plays one of their prime targets – Eva Braun-Hitler – who was revealed to be hiding her husband, Adolf (played by Udo Kier), in South America towards the end of season 1.

Atypical and The Hateful Eight star Jennifer Jason Leigh has joined the cast of Hunters for season 2, along with Tommy Martinez (Good Trouble) and Emily Rudd (Fear Street).

What is Hunters about?

Set in the 1970s, Hunters introduces us to a ragtag band of Nazi hunters comprised of a lock-picker, a spy, a soldier, a master of disguise and two weapons experts – plus new recruit Jonah, who joins after his grandmother's apparent murder.

Throughout the season, they attempt to thwart a deadly plot to build a Fourth Reich in the United States, which brings them onto the radar of rogue FBI agent Millie Morris.

Through their combined efforts, they discover that Adolf Hitler and his bride Eva Braun are still alive and hiding out in South America, which appears to be the primary focus of the second season.

Hunters controversy explained

When season 1 dropped in early 2020, Hunters faced criticism from the Auschwitz Memorial Museum, which preserves the former concentration camp, for using Auschwitz as a setting for fictional elements within the story.

Specifically, the organisation disapproved of a gory game of human chess depicted in the show, describing it as "dangerous foolishness and caricature".

The full statement reads: “Auschwitz was full of horrible pain & suffering documented in the accounts of survivors. Inventing a fake game of human chess for Hunters is not only dangerous foolishness and caricature. It also welcomes future deniers. We honour the victims by preserving factual accuracy."

Creator David Weil, whose grandmother was a holocaust survivor, responded that the chess scene was included to "powerfully counteract the revisionist narrative that whitewashes Nazi perpetration, by showcasing the most extreme – and representationally truthful – sadism and violence that the Nazis perpetrated against the Jews and other victims".

The screenwriter continued that he did not want to depict "specific, real acts of trauma" in the show, nor did he want any of its fictional characters to have the tattooed number of a real victim or survivor.

"I did not want to misrepresent a real person or borrow from a specific moment in an actual person’s life," he explained. "That was the responsibility that weighed on me every night and every morning for years, while writing, producing, editing this show."

Weil added: "If the larger philosophical question is can we ever tell stories about the holocaust that are not documentary, I believe we can and should. Hunters, like a myriad of acclaimed films on the subject, does not always adhere to literal truth in its pursuit of capturing the representational truth of the holocaust.

"My decision to fictionalise was made in awareness of this debate, and this show takes the point of view that symbolic representations provide individuals access to an emotional and symbolic reality that allows us to better understand the experiences of the Shoah and provide it with meaning that can address our urgent present."
